The Competition and Markets Authority sets new rules on transparent pricing for pet owners using vet services
The CMA has finalised new rules for vets after finding that prices have risen at almost twice the rate of inflation. Practices must now publish their prices, prescription fees will be capped and pet owners will find it easier to buy cheaper medicines elsewhere.
Balanced Economy Project says, “The CMA's action is necessary, but it should have gone further. Price lists will help pet owners compare costs, but they leave the ownership of the market untouched. Over the last decade private equity firms have bought up hundreds of independent practices, and a handful of chains now dominate. The CMA had the power to break up that concentration and chose not to use it. Until it does, pet owners will keep overpaying.
