Balanced Economy Project Joins 127 Organisations to Oppose EU Digital Rights Rollback

The Balanced Economy Project stands with 127 civil society organisations and trade unions in urging the European Commission to stop its proposed Digital Omnibus. This sweeping initiative threatens to dismantle cornerstone protections like the GDPR, ePrivacy framework, and the AI Act - laws designed to safeguard people from digital surveillance, automated exclusion, and unchecked corporate power.

If adopted, these changes would mark the largest rollback of digital rights in EU history, undermining hard-won safeguards and eroding trust in Europe’s commitment to rights-based digital governance.

We believe a balanced economy depends on strong, enforceable rules that protect individuals and communities - not on weakening them to serve narrow interests. That’s why we join this collective call for action:

The European Commission must:

  • Halt any attempt to reopen the GDPR, ePrivacy framework, AI Act, or other core digital rights protections.

  • Reaffirm the EU’s commitment to rights-based digital governance and robust enforcement.

  • Ensure accountability and enable meaningful engagement from civil society and impacted communities.
