Challenging Myths, Reimagining Power: We're Heading to Mozilla Festival 2025
The Balanced Economy Project is excited to announce that we’ll be joining the global community at Mozilla Festival 2025, taking place from November 7–9 in Barcelona. This year’s theme, “Unlearning”, invites us to rethink the digital norms we’ve inherited and we’re bringing our boldest ideas to the table.
Our session, “Myth or Reality? Monopolies and profit models”, will take place on 9th November from 10:15 11:15 CET. The session will confront the unchecked power of tech monopolies and the myths that sustain them. From the illusion that corporate finance is essential for sustainability, to the growing influence of private capital in shaping our digital and environmental futures, we’ll explore how concentrated financial power distorts democratic decision-making and undermines meaningful reform.
Why This Matters
As highlighted in our recent findings:
BlackRock backed Shell’s energy strategy while rejecting Paris-aligned proposals.
Vanguard reported 0% support for environmental and social shareholder proposals in 2024.
Private equity giants like Blackstone and Google are investing billions in energy-intensive AI data centres across the UK, with significant environmental implications.
These examples underscore how financial monopolies are driving short-term profit over long-term climate obligations. At Mozilla Festival, we’ll challenge these narratives and propose actionable strategies to reclaim democratic control over our digital and ecological futures.
Join Us in Barcelona
Mozilla Festival is a space for collective imagination and action, where technologists, activists, artists, and policymakers come together to build the digital world we deserve. With over 240 sessions, this year’s event promises to be bigger and bolder than ever.
We are proud to be part of this movement and look forward to connecting with others who are ready to break harmful defaults, build better systems, and enforce accountability.
This year there will be 220+ Interactive Community Sessions, including hands-on workshops and dialogues across six “Unlearning” tracks, from dismantling harmful tech systems to surfacing climate-conscious alternatives.
Mozilla Festival 2025 is a rallying call to think differently, to confront uncomfortable truths, and to build alternatives. While other conferences chase the next market opportunity, Mozilla Festival is asking what kind of digital future we want and how we can build it together.
