Balanced Economy Project submits to Government’s consultation on refining the UK competition regime
The Balanced Economy Project has submitted a response to the Government’s consultation on refining the UK’s competition regime.
The Government says its competition reforms are about growth. We do not accept that. The UK has a market concentration problem and needs stronger competition enforcement, not weaker institutional safeguards.
Our response to the consultation sets out why replacing the existing model for conducting independent in-depth merger reviews, giving Ministers sign-off on CMA guidance and compressing market investigations, all go in the wrong direction.
They are not neutral process changes. They lock political pressure into the way decisions are made, and it is consumers, small businesses and citizens in markets that have stopped working properly who will pay the price.
